Embracing natural color

Madder dye on wool

A few years have gone by since I took my first workshop in natural dyes. A whole world was opening in front of me and I was instantly drawn by the magic of natural color. I bought a couple of amazing books, some big pots at a thrift store and started to make my first dye experiments.

In our hands

We often forget what wonderful tools our hands are. They are the most complex pieces of natural engineering in the human body. They give us grip but also allow us to manipulate objects with great precision.
With them humans can operate big complex machines or small electronic devices with tiny buttons that we press many times a day. (A study of 2016 talks about 2.617 times a day).

But hands also allow us also to hold simple tools in them that make it posible for us to do wonderful things with our skills and art. Tools as a guitar, flute or violin to play music, a cooking knife, spoon or pot to create a delicious meal, a knitting needle and yarn to knit a sweater, or a pen to write a letter or poem. We can do many great things with them that will bring joy to friends, family, ourselves or people we even do not know.

There are many words or actions that include the word "hand": handy, handwriting, handshaking, handwork, handprint, handsewn, handknitted, handmade, handcrafted .... and it makes me wonder if in the future these words will become more out of use.
Living in a world that evolves towards sophisticated technological and electronic devices that will be operated not even by our hands, but our voice comandos, will our hands get out of use or mutate towards a robotized hand? Think about the cars, that drive on their own, without the need of steering the wheel. Think about Sri, that gives answers to our questions on the phone without the need of typing. Or think about the 3D printer that will be able to make our custom cloths without even touching a sewing needle.

Probably this is just the beginning of a new era with big changes ahead of us; this is human evolution and a part of our human specie.
But while machines take over many of our duties I can imagine that there will still be the need to do things with our two hands. Things that will carry our imprint and will not be as perfect as the ones created by machines, but full of feelings and love.
The tactile interaction between our hands and the materials we touch is such an amazing experience. Probably many of you remember hoe great it is to play with a ball of clay. Or if you are a knitter for sure you will agree that one of the things that brings so much joy is to feel how the yarn glides through our fingers and to feel the flow of movements that our hands are able to perform, choreographed in a magic way by the brain.

It will be our choice how much we want to use our hands in the future, because there will hopefully always be mud to play or clay to give shape, bread to knead, pencils to draw and write or wool to spin and knit.
Well then......Hands on !

Thoughts and actions

It has been over three years when I decided to open my studio to the public wanting to infuse creativity into the community and sharing my passion for nature and environmental friendly crafts. During this period I have learned a lot. I learned a lot about fiber,  breeds, yarn properties, knitting, spinning and plies.

Motherhood, knitting and playlist

I was immensely fortunate to give birth to two beautiful girls: Maya and Julia. I feel so grateful and at this point a little melancholic as time has gone by too quickly. My oldest daughter is already studying abroad and the youngest one is leaving this year our nest. Ignacio, my husband and I started this journey together 20 years ago not knowing what great adventure it was going to be becoming parents.

Cereal 11

Foto paisaje revista Cereal

Cereal Magazine, issue 11

I have to admit that Cereal is one of my favorite life style and travel magazines. If I had to describe it in a few words these would be: smooth, clean, white and peaceful. There is something special about it's design transporting you from where you are to other places while turning pages with large photographs and others with a well constructed minimalist design.

Interpretations

To interpret means trying to explain the meaning of a word, a feeling or a fact in form of words, music, tears, colors, laughter or even design.
Interpretations are always unique and marked by personal experiences, our history, culture, or passion...
And certainly the passion for knitting, the contrast and similarities are which each year connects the Finnish designer Veera Välimäki and the Argentinian designer Joji Locatelli at Interpretations.

Little Tatiana / La pequeña Tatiana

Nadya Sheremet is one of these treasures that you find one day online or on Instagram. Her poetic stitches and delicacy have captivated me from the moment I first saw them. With her hands, thread and needles she tells stories impregnated with love. This Ukrainian born woman and mother of two small children has won my heart. I saw her posting little embroidered dolls and I decided to write her and ask if she would make a doll of myself. And here is ...Little Tatiana.

During my Easter vacation I found a little treasure: an old box full of little Easter figures and eggs, that I had painted with my family when I was a kid. It reminded me of how simple it can be to do a craft and how long it can prevail in your memories.

This is the time of the year that I associate the most with pastel colors, specially with pale pink tone. Like always, nature is my big inspiration. Watching  the plum and cherry tree blossom makes me want to see all in pink. That's why this month's focus are the delicate colored and textured yarns and also the vinatge pink, grey mauve, vintage fuchsia and violet colors of Autentico Paint.

Swapetines 2015

Every year Pilar, an experienced knitter, organizes through her blog Tejiendo en la isla a great Sock Swap. This year we are 40 knitters who will knit a pair of sock for someone that we have been assigned to. I am knitting some socks for someone who likes green colors and who has a shoe size 38. (Who will it be...?)

The Japanese word of Hanami means contemplating flowers and it is one of the most beloved events when de cherry trees blossom in Japan. In Mallorca we have our very special Hanami, the one of the almond tree blossoms that fill the landscape at this time of the year with a pale pink and white mantle. I have always felt fascinated by this flower, immensely beautiful and also synonym of the ephemeral in life and the passing of time. This post is my little homage to the almond flower, to the color pale pink, to the freshness of nature and the naturally simple things.

Escarcha / Frost

Frost is the name of one of the Bulky yarns that we offer at OPENstudio79. I have always felt fascinated by these fine ice crystals in the shape of scales, needles or feathers that form delicate pattern. Marvelous things of nature, who at this time of the year wants to hide the colour of the world.

I have always been fascinated by Tillandsias, these wonderful plants that don't need to root into soil but like to be suspended in the air. There they receive the humidity, the breeze, the sunshine they need and from now and then a little rain shower. In very dry climate they like to be soaked every one or two weeks in water (preferably soft water wihtout chemicals).
