El verano es la mejor estación para trabajar fuera y mojarse las manos. Me pareció el momento ideal para hacer un taller de Shibori en OPENstudio79. Aún no me considero una experta en la preparación del índigo, pero tras realizar hace unos meses un taller con Rosa Caterina Bosch de Tinctorum, sólo podía pensar en aprender y experimentar más con esta increíble forma de teñir.
Summer is a great season to work outside and get your hands wet. It seemed to me a perfect moment for doing a Shibori workshop at OPENstudio79. I have to admit that I am not an expert yet in preparing an Indigo vat, but earlier in the year I did a workshop with Rosa Caterina Bosch Tinctorum and it made me want to learn more and experiment with this amazing dye.
Durante este taller trabajamos con diferentes técnicas de Shibori: Arashi, Kumo, Ne Maki, Itajime, Nui Mokume. Shibori es una antigua técnica de teñido japonesa, que fue muy popular en el Período Edo. Muchas otras civilizaciones han utilizado y siguen utilizando técnicas de teñido, desde las culturas precolombinas, a los tintoreros de Indonesia, China, India y, por supuesto, Japón.
During this workshop we worked different Shibori techniques: Arashi, Kumo, Ne Maki, Itajime, Nui Mokume. Shibori is an ancient Japanese resist dying technique, which became very popular during the EDO Period. Many other civilizations have used and still use tie dye techniques from Pre-Colombian cultures to Indonesian, Chinese, Indian and of course Japanese dyers.
El índigo es otro de los aliados del shibori. Es un tinte que se se ha utilizado a lo largo de la historia en muchas culturas. Existen muchas especies diferentes de plantas de índigo, pero las más comunes son Indigofera tinctoriar, Isatis tinctoria and Indigfera suffuctinosa. También hay diferentes recetas para preparar la mezcla de índigo, casi tantas como tintoreros. Al final yo me decanté por preparar una tina orgánica con fructosa y cal apagada (hidróxido de calcio).
Indigo is the other ally of shibori. It is an ancient dye which has been used throughout history in many cultures. There are many different species of indigo plants, but the most common are Indigofera tinctoriar, Isatis tinctoria and Indigfera suffuctinosa. Also there are different recipes for preparing and Indigo vat; each dyer has it's favorite one. I chose to prepare an organic vat with fructose and slaked lime (calcium hidroxide).
Resulta fascinante ver cómo el color azul de la tina de índigo se va convirtiendo en verde o amarillo. ¡La magia del oxígeno! El índigo no es soluble en agua y necesita de un agente reductor, que reduzca la molécula de oxígeno del índigo y consiga hacerlo soluble, y de una base (alcalina), que ayude al agente reductor a hacer su trabajo.
It is fascinating to see how the blue Indigo vat turnes green and yellow. The magic of oxygen! Indigo is not soluble in water. It needs a reducing agent, which reduces the oxygen molecule of the indigo and makes it soluble and a base (alkali) which helps the reducing agent to do it's work.
Las telas se pueden sumergir varias veces en la cubeta de índigo para conseguir tonalidades más oscuras de azul, aunque como disponíamos de poco tiempo durante el taller, tan sólo pudimos sumergir nuestras piezas una vez, con los que conseguimos este precioso azul tan veraniego.
The fabric can be dipped several times into the Indigo vat to get darker shades of blue, but during this workshop we were short in time and dipped our pieces just once, getting a beautiful summer sky blue!
Uno de los momentos más emocionantes de hacer el shibori es cuando se deshacen los nudos, se quitan los elásticos y se extienden las telas al aire libre donde el color verdoso del tinte se oxida y se convierte de nuevo en azul.
Hay muchísimas opciones: doblar, apretar, atar, coser la tela... con cada una de esas técnicas conseguirás una patrón o dibujo completamente diferente. Las posibilidades son tantas como los tonos de azul que se pueden conseguir con el índigo. Todo depende de lo preciso o lo juguetón que quieras ser, dejando rienda suelta a la creatividad y tu imaginación.
There are so many options to pleat, squeeze, tie, sew the fabric and each technique will give a different expression to the fabric. The possibilities are so many as well as the shades of blue you can achieve with Indigo dyes too. All depends on your how accurate or playful you want to be and how you set your creativity and imagination free.
