Color, transformation & Knitting Playlist III

Esta es la historia de una transformación, una metamorfosis de color y recuerdos. Este verano celebramos un cumpleaños muy especial en casa. Mi hija Julia cumplía 18 años. Preparé un ramo de flores con rosas y eucaliptos para mi hija, que ya dejaba de ser una niña. Los días fueron pasando, las celebraciones acabaron y, poco a poco, las flores se fueron marchitando. Secamos las flores para conservarlas y, en cuanto recogí las hojas de eucalipto, se me ocurrió un plan ideal para ellas.

This is the story of a transformation, a metamorphosis in terms of color and memories. It was last summer when we had a very special bday to celebrate at home. My daughter Julia was becoming 18 years old. I prepared a flower bouquet of wild roses and eucalyptus for my little one, who was no longer a child anymore. Days went by, the partying was over and little by little the flowers faded, dropping their heads. We would keep the dry roses and as I was holding the eucalyptus in my hand I instantly had a plan for it.

Decidí utilizar las hojas para teñir una madeja de lana, con la que después tejerle algo especial a mi hija. El eucalipto es la planta perfecta para experimentar con tintes naturales, ya que existen cientos de especies diferentes de eucalipto y se puede extraer tinte tanto de la corteza como de las hojas y lograr diferentes tonos de amarillo, naranja y marrón.

I would use the leaves as a natural dye to color a hank of yarn and make a special gift out of it for her. Eucalyptus is a plant that is perfect for experimenting with dyes. There are hundreds of different species of eucalyptus trees. The bark and the leaves can be used for extracting the dye and one can achieve different shades of yellow, orange, or brown.  

Dejé las hojas de eucalipto en remojo durante una noche y las herví después durante un par de horas para extraer el tinte. Después de colar el tinte y extraer las hojas, introduje la fibra húmeda, que previamente había mordentado con alumbre, en la cacerola esmaltada que utilizo para teñir. Calenté la mezcla a 75 º y la dejé cocer a fuego lento durante una hora y después dejé que se enfriara lentamente.

I soaked the eucalyptus leaves overnight in water and boiled them for a couple of hours to extract the dye from them. After I strained the dye, extracting the leaves and introduced the alum pre-mordanted wet fiber into my enamel dye pot, applying heat (70º C) and letting it cool down after 1 hour of simmering.

La lana cogió un precioso tono amarillo, pero no lo suficientemente intenso. Ya podía intuir que, después de secarse, se vería aún más claro. Como no estaba convencida de que ese tono le fuera el ideal para Julia, decidí darle un baño de índigo a la fibra recién teñida de amarillo y el resultado no pudo gustarme más: un color precioso con diferentes tonalidades de verde que me asemejaban al color que tenían las hojas de eucalipto del ramo original.

The fibers got a beautiful yellow color, but it was not vey intense. I could imagine that it would look much lighter once dry. Not sure if I would like this shade for Julia I over dyed the yellow fiber with an indigo bath and I loved what came out. The result was a very beautiful color with amazing shades of green that resembled the actual color of the eucalyptus leaves at the bouquet.

El siguiente paso era tender la madeja en el patio de mi estudio para que se secara y buscar un patrón de una sola madeja para una lana worsted. Como no podía ser de otra manera, en Ravelry encontré un patrón que se ajustaba a lo que necesitaba: el Honey Cowl diseñado por Antonia Shankland y publicado en MadelineTosh.

The next step was to hang it outside at my studio to dry and then to look for a nice pattern that would use only one hank of worsted yarn. At wonderful Ravelry I found a project that was fitting my necessities:  the Honey Cowl by Antonia Shankland published in  MadelineTosh. 

Tejí el cuello durante nuestro viaje a Norwich, en cuya universidad Julia comenzaría a estudiar Ilustración. Pasé unos días con ella ayudándola a instalarse y acabé el cuello justo a tiempo, pero no tuve tiempo de hacerle una foto con su regalo... Estábamos más preocupadas de disfrutar cada minuto juntas antes de que yo volviera a Mallorca y tuviéramos que despedirnos.

I knitted the cowl for her on our trip to Norwich, where Julia was starting her BA in Illustration at the University and I was with her to help her settle in. I finished it in time and but we ran out of time to take a picture of her wearing the cowl. We were more concerned about spending every minute together with intensity before saying good bye to each other as I was soon returning on my own back to Mallorca.

El cuello ahora le sirve para protegerse del frío de Norwich y también para recordar aquellos días de verano. A pesar de la distancia, seguimos con la misma conexión y, hace unas semanas, fue ella la que había preparado una sorpresa para mí y para todos vosotros... The Knitting playlist III. Now she is using her cowl up in the cold north and thinking back of her summer memories. But despite of the distance we still keep so much connected and some weeks ago it was her who had a special surprise for me and all of you: The Knitting playlist III .
